Body mass index, or BMI, is a measure of body size. It combines a person’s weight with their height. The results of a BMI measurement can give an idea about whether a person has the correct weight for their height. To determine your body mass index, divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared.
BMI is a screening tool that can indicate whether a person is underweight or if they have a healthy weight, excess weight, or obesity. If a person’s BMI is outside of the healthy range, their health risks may increase significantly. If you want to compare your weight status to others, BMI is a great method of analysis.

Why is BMI Important?

If your BMI is high, you may also have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, as well as other metabolic diseases such as hypertension, high cholesterol and heart disease.

BMI and other long term health risks
The World Health Organisation (WHO) lists a high BMI as a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, bone and joint problems including osteoarthritis and a number of cancers, including breast, colon and endometrial cancer.
BMI for Children
Although the BMI calculator works in the same way for children, the measurement is used differently. While the BMI ranges remain the same for adults throughout their life, these figures change in children because kids are still growing and do so at different rates. As a result, BMI is a measure of weight for height compared to children of the same age. This calculation results in a body mass index percentile.
